Hi again,
My second week in the Bay Area was a busy one and this week will be just as busy. I’m getting used to the area and it’s getting easier to find my way around (although I have gotten lost a few times). I still can’t believe I’m here doing what I love and having so many new experiences along the way. It’s been going really well. Last week I met up with a few awesome photographers, Scott Peterson was the first, he invited me down to his studio to chat about photography things and talk about how he works. Next was Joyce Oudkerk Pool. I got to go down to her studio as well and she had tons of great advice for me and ways to help me get started on this journey. I will be working with Joyce this week on some shoots and can’t wait to learn more and more about the food photography world. Lastly I met up with Cody Gantz who is a Hallmark alumni from 2009. It was really great to talk with cody since he’s working as an assistant to photographers in the area. He also had lots of great advice and information for me which I’m very thankful for. He also showed me around the lovely Mission and Castro districts in San Francisco and bought me food at Tartine Bakery (so good!). Cody is a great guy and super nice! I’m so grateful that these talented people are so open to meeting up with me and showing me what they do.

Over the weekend I went up to the Lake Tahoe area with my Aunt and Uncle. They have a cabin up there and go to it every weekend in the winter. They needed to go up to build their snow tunnel for the walkway to the cabin (The snow gets up to 5 feet or more up there, something I’ve never experienced). So we drove up and there was about 6 inches of snow, which was exciting. All the cabins up there are so unique and cozy! It was really fun. We did a few short hikes and saw some amazing views and sunsets. It’s such a beautiful area. The city is a lot of fun but there’s nothing like being surrounded by trees and breathing the mountain air. I’m so happy I grew up in the woods back in New England and have been going camping since I was a kid. It’s a part of me and it’s something I truly appreciate.

I hope you enjoy my photos and I’m sure I’ll do another blog post at the end of this week.

I want to live in this cabin!

Live it up, live it up, or just come back home.

Hey everyone!
As you probably know, I’m in the lovely state of California! Northern Cali to be more specific. It’s beautiful here and there’s so many new things to explore and do.

Monday and Tuesday I explored San Francisco by myself to get to know the area better and what not. On Wednesday I went into the city again to meet up with Kelly Boitano, a friend from Hallmark and an amazing photographer, check out her work! We went to the parade for the Giants, which was crazy and so much fun! After that we met up with her friend Clay and walked around the city, got some good food and took photos of course! It was a great day and I hope we all get together again.

On Thursday I went to Stacy Ventura’s house in Fairfax where she recently converted her garage into a studio. Stacy does beautiful food photography and she was great to talk to and hang out with and I hope we get to work together in the future!

On Friday I went to Sara Remington’s studio where she was working on a cook book shoot. It was really cool to see her team in action and collaborate to make the project a reality. All of her work was beautiful and they were all really fun people.

And finally yesterday, my friend from home Lindsey and her boyfriend and his friend were here and I met up with them in the city. We went all over the place. Lindsey and I walked around on Haight street which was really neat, lots of unique stores and places to eat. We walked a little in Golden Gate park, headed to the Golden Gate Bridge and then ended up down at Fisherman’s Warf for dinner. Lot’s of walking but an awesome day!

Starting tomorrow I’ll be meeting up with 3 more photographers as the week goes on and I’m excited to see what they have to offer with their shooting styles and their personalities.

I am exhausted but totally loving it here! I’m so lucky I have this opportunity and I’m thinking I may come back here after the holidays and stay for a while…who knows!;)Look out for more posts soon!

Michelle & Jeff Married

Hey everyone!
Last weekend I got the wonderful opportunity to second shoot at Michelle and Jeff’s wedding thanks to Joe Dimattia. It is only my second wedding that I’ve shot and I had a lot of fun. It was so easy to photograph this beautiful family and now I can’t wait to shoot another! We had a good amount of time before the wedding to photograph the girls getting ready. The bride’s sister’s daughters were the cutest and I wish I took more photos of them. After that there was the ceremony and a reception at the church. The day was brought to a close with a small reception for the family at a beautiful golf course where we spent time doing formal shots. I wish the newlyweds all the best and I hope you all enjoy the photos!

Busy, Busy

Hi Everyone!
I’ve had a lot going on these past few weeks and there’s still more to come. The future is looking very good. I am constantly amazed by what this career path has brought to me and all the great people I have met along the way.

So first off, I got a great opportunity to do some photographs for a new quarterly magazine called Mainely Spirits. I was given the task to come up with a cover for the spring quarterly. It’s really a test to see how I interpreted the assignment and what ideas I came up with. It’s still in the works but I’m excited about the shots I got. My mom and I took a trip up the coast to shoot and although dealing with the wind and the weather was tough at some points, we had a blast working on it and loved being in Maine, it was gorgeous up there. I want to post photos from it but I’m not sure I can just yet, but stay tuned and you may see it in the future! (Hopefully in print too!).

A few weeks ago I had my first senior portrait session! I was pretty nervous about it but I think it went well for my first one. We went to the field I talked about in my last post. It was pretty cloudy that day, I would have liked it to have been a little sunnier but hey, you work with what you get! Megan’s mom asked me to re do her senior portraits because they weren’t happy with the ones they had done through the high school. Megan was a good sport and her mom was a great assistant. Here’s a few photos from the day!

Last week I contacted photographer Joe Dimattia and asked him about his job and what he does. He told me I could come on some shoots with him if I wanted to and ended up going with him to shoot the Galkin group, a band that plays folk and bluegrass music while traveling all over the US and the world. They were such a fun group, I loved getting to know them for the short amount of time we were together. They are all extremely talented and I was lucky enough to see their concert that night. I hope our paths cross again one day. I also can’t wait to work with Joe again, he’s a really fun guy and super nice! Check out his work here http://www.dimattiaphotography.net/

About a week ago, a girl who I went to high school with, Kristina, contacted me about doing a shoot. She is a senior in high school this year and is looking to go to school for nursing but loves to do modeling on the side. We ended up shooting yesterday and it was a lot of fun! She is a great model and super easy to work with. I had a great time and I am very excited with the photos I got. Here are some of my favorites from the day and I encourage you to check out more on my flickr

She was so much fun to work with and we are already planning another shoot. Keep on the look out for more blog posts soon!:)

The Kindness of Strangers

Ok so this is a long one but I have a lot to talk about! I’ve been busy gathering props and new things to shoot while enjoying what New England has to offer this time of year. Again, I’ve been visiting the local farms and have had so many great experiences. I’ve never been a very outgoing person and never had the confidence to talk to people I didn’t know on my own. Even now I still get nervous but I really am much better than I used to be. Recently I realized how just asking questions and talking to people you don’t know can be a great thing. Yes you may get rejected or turned down, or you might discover what you are looking for and make a new contact and meet some one really interesting.

While driving around near where I live looking for places to shoot an upcoming senior portrait session, I stumbled upon one of the most beautiful pieces of land I’ve seen since I lived in Western Mass. I drove by a few times and then eventually parked at one of the gates. I looked around a bit and guessed that it probably looked suspicious since a man came down to the mailbox where I was parked to check his mail. I was feeling especially confident that day and couldn’t pass up this opportunity. I timidly asked the man who owned the land and explained that I was a photographer. I came to find out that he owned this gorgeous place and he went on to tell me that his family was spread out along the road and owned different parts of it. He also said I could come by and shoot here whenever I wanted. How awesome is that? He said I could walk around and take a look, so that’s what I did, and it was not disappointing. Needless to say I am very excited to shoot at this place this weekend and I can’t say enough how grateful I am that I am able to go here anytime. I never got his name, but to that man out there, thank you!

Gorgeous right? ahhh.

Over the weekend I got to take a little trip to the lovely Newport, Rhode Island. If you’ve never been I highly recommend it. Also if you do, you must get some fudge from Kilwin’s . It’s so good.
Anyway, I went there because my dad and his girlfriend wanted me to go with them to the boat show. It was a great day! Besides me falling in front of large crowds of people and injuring myself, it was really fun haha. We saw lots of beautiful (and expensive!) boats, mostly sailboats which is what we prefer. My dad loves sailing and boats so he was having a blast and after a long day of walking around we had a delicious meal at The Red Parrot . Just thinking about it makes me hungry! And to end the night, we walked around downtown, got some coffee and enjoyed ourselves. It was so nice.:)

My Dad

My dad, in his happy place.

My mom and I took a day to explore around and what started as a see what we can find at yard sales kind of day we ended up back at the local farms and had a great time! First we went to a place we’d never been before, called Running Fox Farm , where we met Claudia Conway, who owns the farm with her husband Dave. She was so nice and showed us all around the gardens that she has at the farm. She told me about the different flowers she grows and how beautiful they are and that I should come back in the spring to take pictures of them. She was so nice! I bought a chair and some of the coolest looking garlic I’ve ever seen (you’ll see those pictures in a moment) and we exchanged business cards. I will definitely be going back there.

Next up we headed to Hackleboro Orchards and also took a stop at Apple hill Farm too. We found lots of good looking veggies and things, bought a pumpkin and talked to another awesome person, Linda Weiser who works at Hackleboro and also is an artist. She does theatrical face painting as well as many other things such as logo design and murals. I couldn’t find a website for her but she has a fan page on facebook if you type in Linda Weisers Face Painting. She was kind enough to let me look around the farm for some srap wood to use for a prop as a back ground or surface. I found a great piece and used it in my upcoming photos. We also exchanged business cards.

So I met some great locals and made some new contacts while taking loads of photos along the way. I’d say it was a very successful time. Enough writing, here are some of the pictures I took!

peppers of all sorts

Shell beans! They are so cool. We got a bunch because my mom loves them!

Hope you enjoyed these! There are a lot more on my Flickr so please head there if you want to look at some more!!
