Celebrating Spring and Easter – New England Food and Lifestyle Photographer

Spring is finally here and the temperatures are warming up! (Although, I’ve seen a few snow showers here and there…that’s New England for you! ) Now that things are melting and thawing it’s time we saw some color after things have been gray for so long. On Easter for Tell New England we posted a blog about naturally dyeing eggs which was pretty fun and I wanted to share my images here as well. The fact that you can get so many shades and colors, some more neutral and some more vibrant from vegetables, fruits, coffee, tea, flowers, etc was so interesting! You can also wrap plants, herbs, or string around the eggs to get different patterns. See the full tutorial on the Tell New England Journal.

For the second part of this post, I wanted to bake something, and the timing is perfect because I celebrate two Easters. The other one being Greek Easter which will be this Sunday! Both have their benefits and I have to say my favorite part is the food! (Especially for Greek Easter).

One of my favorite Greek dishes to make is Spanakopita, but I haven’t done much baking on my own. My Yia Yia used to make these buttery Greek cookies with me when I was little and I wanted to try them out. They are called Koulourakia and they are delicious, light, crumbly cookies that go great with coffee. These cookies are usually served on Easter and sometimes Christmas. It took a bit to get them rolled out to the sizes I preferred, but once that was sorted out it was smooth sailing from there. The combination of butter and sugar is a winner every time in my book.

Next, I went for something a little more challenging. I decided to make another traditional baked good of Greece called Melitinia. I had never heard of these or had them, but they sounded wonderful! Cheese….who doesn’t like cheese? These are described as sweet cheese pastries and they were a bit more complicated. For my first try it wasn’t too bad, however, they didn’t come out that great, but hey, worth a shot! Hopefully I’ll be able to try the real thing someday – as in something made by a seasoned Greek baker, haha.

I can’t wait for all the amazing Greek food I will be consuming this Sunday!

Cheers!
